Cindy Wu, Chinatown CDC Community Planning Manager, was sworn in on February 9th as the newest member of the San Francisco Planning Commission by Board of Supervisors President David Chiu during a ceremony and reception at the I-Hotel.

David Chiu nominated Cindy to replace Christina Olague, who stepped down from her position as the Planning Commission President to become District Five's Supervisor. The Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to confirm Cindy's appointment.

"We are so pleased that our own Cindy Wu was appointed to the Planning Commission," said Norman Fong, Chinatown CDC Executive Director, who emceed the ceremony. "Through her work, Cindy has connected people to decisions that affect their lives and helped make those issues understandable. She'll make a terrific commissioner."

"I am excited to serve on the Planning Commission and to bring my experience of breaking down barriers that prevent ordinary people from access to land use decisions," said Cindy. "I am proud to represent the values of inclusion and education, and also of development without displacement."

Dozens of guests attended the swearing-in, including Supervisor Jane Kim, Planning Commissioners Rodney Fong, Hisashi Sugaya, Kathrin Moore, Director of Planning John Rahaim, Chinatown CDC board members and staff, members of Community Tenants Association, and Cindy's family and friends.

Cindy is also a board member of the San Francisco Planning and Urban Research Association and a member of the Transportation Authority's Citizens Advisory Committee. She holds a master's in city planning from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a bachelor's degree in architecture from UC Berkeley. Previously, Cindy worked in supportive housing at Glide Community House in the Tenderloin.

The seven-member Planning Commission oversees development, growth and land-use projects in San Francisco. Big projects it will consider this year include the California Pacific Medical Center's expansion and 8 Washington, a series of luxury condos proposed for the waterfront.
