On October 5, 2012, Chinatown Community Development Center (Chinatown CDC) celebrated its 35th Anniversary Gala, “A Hand, A Voice, A Home” at the Hilton San Francisco Union Square.
Three deserving community leaders were recognized for their tireless efforts and work to develop more affordable housing in San Francisco: Mr. William A. Witte, Mr. Calvin Welch, and Mrs. Chang Jok Lee.

“A HAND – Mrs. Lee, a grassroots community advocate, has given a hand to many public housing residents since 1952 when the original Chinatown Public Housing Developments were built. She has also been a voice when improvements were needed and residents wanted change.
“A VOICE – Mr. Welch, Founder of the Council of Community Housing Organizations and Director of San Francisco Clearinghouse has been a huge voice for the affordable housing movement since the ‘70s and he can still do so to ensure the voices of the low-income community are heard in San Francisco.
“A HOME – Mr. Witte, President of Related California, has served as the Deputy Mayor for Housing under two San Francisco mayors and Federal Housing Commissioner Executive Assistant in Washington DC. He helped build our homes,” Chinatown CDC Executive Director Rev. Norman Fong said.
Award Presenters included Mayor Edwin Lee; V. Fei Tsen, Chair of Chinatown CDC’s Board of Directors; and Rev. Norman Fong.

Mayor Edwin Lee (right) and Chinatown CDC Executive Director Rev. Norman Fong (left) presented Mrs. Chang Jok Lee with a proclamation from the City and County of San Francisco.
Over 550 guests celebrated with Chinatown CDC to acknowledge the three honorees’ community service while enjoying a pleasant dinner, silent auction, raffle, and photo booth. Adding flair to the Gala was Warriors Hype Man Franco Finn as Master of Ceremonies and music by 14-year-old jazz and blues pianist Matt Wong.
We are grateful that we can count on so many friends, sponsors, donors, volunteers, and partners for sharing their support and time.
“It takes ‘SUPER-COLLABORATION’ to get things done in San Francisco and Chinatown CDC tries hard to work with the city, community organizers and advocates, developers and contractors, bankers, tenants, and the poor and wealthy to build community, so that our organization is A Hand, A Voice, and A Home for those who count on us,” Fong said.
