Resident Services Print
DRO_Inspections_28 Chinatown CDC provides services-enriched housing to enhance the quality of life of our residents and enable them to become self-sufficient, living independently for as long as possible.

We believe in community investment, fostering social networks in our housing and the neighborhoods we serve so residents remain connected to and actively participate in issues that impact them. Our residential services staff works closely with Property Management at our buildings to assist residents in maintaining their housing, to educate residents about important tenant laws and housing issues, and to nurture safe and healthy communities.

Chinatown CDC tenants are predominantly low-income immigrants -- seniors, single adults, and families with children, representing a diverse range of languages. Over 80% of our residents have limited English proficiency and benefit from translation and interpretation services that assist them in understanding important documents that affect their benefits, housing status, and health.

We provide resident services at seventeen of our properties with over 1200 apartments and 1900 residents. Our properties are located in the North Beach, Barbary Coast, Chinatown, Polk Gulch, Western Addition, and Tenderloin neighborhoods.

Our basic services at our properties include:

  • New resident move-in outreach
  • Information and referrals on local resources
  • Translation and interpretation
  • Assistance in navigating paperwork and public benefits
  • Resident health and wellness checks
  • Eviction prevention assistance
  • Conflict mediation

Core Programs

Resident Empowerment

BFA-chinese_calligraphy

We strongly believe in developing tenant leaders to be agents of change for themselves and their communities. To do this we engage residents in neighborhood discussions on safety, neighborhood planning projects, and public policy measures. We assist residents in developing independent Tenant Councils at their buildings. We support their democratic elections as well as provide trainings for newly-elected Tenant Council members. In partnership with Chinatown CDC’s Organizing Team, we offer grassroots leadership trainings for emerging tenant leaders and opportunities to participate in national leadership conferences sponsored by NeighborWorks America.

Educational Workshops and Activities

BFA-workshop

To enrich the lives of our residents we provide education on various topics and arts and cultural programs where tenants participate in creative projects. We often work with other community organizations to provide workshops on a variety of topics including health, personal safety, fire prevention, tenants’ rights, financial literacy, and disaster preparedness.

Social and Recreational Activities

We facilitate a variety of social, cultural, and intergenerational activities to bridge our diverse residents together. Some of our activities include cultural celebrations such as potlucks, field trips, community barbecues, holiday toy drives for kids, and senior and youth bingo.

Many of our tenants are low-income immigrants—seniors, single adults, and families with children representing a diverse range of languages—over 80% of which have limited English proficiency. We provide translation, interpretation, education, and other services to assist them in

understanding important documents that affect their benefits, housing status, and health. Through our programs we work to build healthy, empowered communities at our buildings and in our neighborhoods.
