Mrs. Lei - Housing Counseling client

Granny Lei

After my husband passed away, I had immense financial difficulty, evicted by no fault of my own, and had nowhere to go. I found Chinatown CDC and the housing counselors helped me apply for housing and educated me on tenant rights. Since then, my housing situation has been stabilized.

Through Chinatown CDC, I have become empowered to take control of my life. I am more independent and engaged with community issues. The housing counselors are always willing to help, even with issues beyond housing. They told me about Lifeline low-income telephone services and after applying I received a free portable specialized phone! When the staff support and encourage me, I feel hopeful and happier.

For over 25 years, I lived in different “for-profit hotel.” I was always surrounded by criminals with my things stolen, and I was always in the company of violent and greedy people. One of the hotels I stayed in was full of bugs and thieves. I was later allowed to move into a Chinatown CDC unit, which is a refuge and much better than San Francisco’s “for-profit hotels.” Thanks to Chinatown CDC for a safe and comfortable place to live.

I am already 80 years old.  In the past two years, I have attended Chinatown CDC’s third annual “Community Leadership Training” and the National Community Leaderships Training. These trainings helped me learn about community service and acquire management experience, which also motivated me to become a volunteer. Every week at the Coffee Hour held by the building I live in, I would lead all residents in the karaoke activity and teach them to sing, which entertains everyone’s physical and mental health while livening up the meetings. I thank Chinatown CDC and its staff for giving us the support, assistance and motivation. Thank you!

Kuk Ying Yip  - Housing Counseling client

I immigrated to America over 20 years ago. I am a low-income, monolingual senior. Chinatown CDC’s Housing Counseling staff has helped me countless times on applying for senior and low-income affordable housing units. I have not had a lot of luck so far, but they have given me the strength to never give up.

Empowered through their counseling model and practices, I have become a volunteer for campaigns that affect the future of our city including the Proposition C “Affordable Housing Fund.” I learned to give back to the community and joined community groups instead of living in isolation.
