Chinatown Community Development Center’s

Statement on Mayor Edwin M. Lee’s Passing

On behalf of the Board and Staff of Chinatown Community Development Center, we express our deepest condolences to the Mayor’s family and his many friends. Our organization had the honor to work with Ed Lee for almost forty years and cannot fully express in this sudden and tragic occasion the full impact of his life’s work on our community.

Mayor Ed Lee dedicated his life to community service. His work to serve tenants, the elderly, the poor, and disadvantaged communities began long before he came to City Hall.

Ed Lee carried forward that commitment to his role as Mayor. As Mayor he brought his experience in representing the tenants of public housing in Chinatown to launch the largest initiative to upgrade public housing across the City. In many other ways he sought to be the City’s Housing Mayor, expanding support for affordable housing even as federal and state policies retreated from that commitment.

Mayor Lee’s legacy to the Chinese American community will live well beyond his passing. We honor him for his lifelong commitment the community, including his work on the Chinatown Plan, which has stood the test of time by protecting the nation’s strongest and most vibrant Chinatown.

Ed Lee will be deeply missed by all of us.
