Billionaire Supports Chinatown

I can’t believe that Marc Benioff came to join us last Sunday at Portsmouth Square to help us with the most important issue of building more affordable housing which will help the Homeless and Chinatown SRO Families. I just couldn’t believe that he would join our cause to support Proposition C. How many bigshot billionaires have you ever seen come to support a Chinatown Rally in person?

What’s most interesting is that he is willing to increase taxes on his own company – Salesforce! It will cost him millions each year! As usual, there will be a lot of business and real estate interests, and politicians opposing Prop C because we don’t want the big companies to leave San Francisco – but here we have one of those big companies saying – TAX US! San Francisco needs more affordable housing and we have to seriously do more to get the Homeless into affordable housing from our streets. Also, in Prop C funding, 25% will go to address the issue of homeless people (many of them struggling with physical and mental health disabilities) having to stay at Portsmouth Square, our alleyways and doorways in Chinatown and many of other neighborhoods.

I wanted to write about this because for me, it’s a dream come true. We have a lot of voter power in San Francisco and sometimes, our community especially gets divided (for various reasons). This time, we have a local – homegrown San Franciscan who is donating over $2 million into our dream for more affordable housing. I am so excited and filled with hope because of this billionaire with a heart for the poor and who is brave enough to “Give back” to the San Francisco low-income community in a tangible way that unites us in a new way.

Can the Tech Companies contribute more to help those in need in San Francisco? Can the wealthy give up more of their wealth to directly help the people of San Francisco? As I stood next to the very tall billionaire with the tallest building in San Francisco lighting up our nights in San Francisco – I thought – this was one of the most unbelievable moments in my life.

Maybe we can help solve the huge homeless issue in San Francisco. Maybe we can get more of our Chinatown families living in tiny Chinatown rooms into new affordable housing. Maybe we can help people like Aaron Truong – the Homeless man who was brutally killed in front of Cameron House (where I used to work). Maybe we can make a real difference in making San Francisco more safe and clean in all our neighborhoods. Never give up. Never become too cynical that you don’t want to care or vote or get involved in political issues of our day. I am so proud of Chinatown SRO Families, the Community Tenants Association, our youth and our social service agencies that STOOD TALL LAST SUNDAY with Marc Benioff. Our community is RICH in spirit and the desire to help those in need… but it’s much nicer to do it with a financial giant. Thanks Marc! Have faith that one day no one will need to sleep on the streets and all SRO families will have decent housing!
