Chinatown CDC acquires 1535 Jackson

“We are so excited to preserve this housing for residents and incredibly grateful for all the support that we’ve received, ” said Omar Rahmaoui, Project Manager.

The building is at the border of Chinatown and Nob Hill, on Jackson Street between Polk and Larkin. The property has 19 Single Room Occupancy (SRO) units on the second and third floors. The building was previously owned by the Chinese Community Church of San Francisco and is currently occupied by extremely low-income senior tenants with average household incomes of 18% AMI.

The majority of residents are monolingual Chinese speakers and would not be able to stay in the neighborhood if they lost their housing. Due to their age, these residents are especially vulnerable, physically and health-wise to displacement if they were to be evicted or if their rents were raised significantly.

Chinatown CDC officially acquired 1535 Jackson on May 8, 2019, and plans to rehabilitate the property and add up to 11 units of new permanently affordable housing on the ground floor of the building. Acquiring this site, adding new units of permanently affordable housing, and stabilizing the vulnerable existing residents directly aligns with Chinatown CDC’s mission.

Ada Tan, Assistant Project Manager added, “The Chinatown CDC Small Sites team has long awaited this closing and we are glad that this property has officially been added to our portfolio.
