Broadway Family Apartments is an affordable family housing community located near the intersection of the Embarcadero and Broadway. Formerly an off-ramp location, the site was transferred from the state to San Francisco after the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake and the ensuing demolition of the Embarcadero Freeway. The City asked for development proposals for the site and Chinatown CDC was selected to be the developer. An extensive community outreach process assured that community concerns were addressed. Located in the Northeast Waterfront Historic District, the building was designed to emulate the historic context and neighboring heights while also creating a visually interesting streetscape and a protected courtyard. The property features two commercial spaces on Broadway and a licensed childcare center. Residents also have access to voluntary supportive on-site services.
