After the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989, the Embarcadero Freeway was deemed seismically unsafe. A long and contentious decision-making process ended with CalTrans’ decision to demolish the freeway and transfer sites that formerly housed the freeway to the City of San Francisco. The Broadway Sansome site was the Broadway on-ramp for the Embarcadero Freeway. The City decided to dedicate the site to affordable housing and, in June 2007, the Mayor’s Office of Housing selected CCDC as the developer of the site. The Broadway Sansome building is a 75 unit project with a community room, space for service provision to residences, an interior courtyard, and roof decks. It will feature retail spaces at the Broadway-Battery and Broadway-Sansome corners. Broadway Sansome will be home both to families whose income is so low it makes them homeless or at risk of homelessness, and to families with more stable but still low incomes. A wide variety of supportive services will be provided by Chinatown CDC Resident Services.
