We Need Help Now with Central Subway Delay

Chinatown was never the same after the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake. It destroyed so much but also resulted in the demolishing of Chinatown’s ONE direct access to the rest of the Bay Area, the Embarcadero Freeway! This was so unfortunate because Chinatown has long been the cultural and spiritual center of the Chinese-American population in the Bay Area… People return to visit family or to get their Chinese food fix! Our community has been “fractured” in that sense since 1989 and the intent of Central Subway is to bring our community back together by restoring that connection. As we have learned recently, there will be at least 2 more years of delays facing the project!!

After waiting 30 years to unite our community back together, we are disappointed to hear that we will have to hold on longer for something that should have been in service already. Our community has been patiently waiting for the completion of the project for years. I remember working so hard with the community to make that Central Subway dream come true and now it has been a nightmare for so many of us. My home Church is right next door and there have been so many inconveniences. Sometimes, Gum Moon residents across the street can’t sleep at night because of the noise. Of course, our small businesses continue to suffer. So with that in mind, a DIRECT transportation connection into Chinatown is even more IMPORTANT in the present-day! So we are asking that the following measures be implemented by SFMTA as a temporary solution:

#1. Bay Area marketing & advertising for Chinatown
#2. Sunset Express bus to Chinatown (The Sunset is the only neighborhood that does not have a direct connection into Chinatown)
#3. Overtime Cops (Public safety & homelessness are two major concerns in Chinatown right now.)
#4. Deep Steam Clean of Chinatown (We have major sanitation issues & we need to beautify our community)
#5. Launch Cruise Ship Shuttlebus to and from Chinatown & North Beach (We need to make it easier for all those visitors from around world to come up to Chinatown)

We believe that these five mitigation measures reflect the intent of the Central Subway project and will be an appropriate way to help bring back our community together. San Francisco – let’s “get it Together”.
