Over 500 residents, community leaders and supporters joined us on Friday, March 20th at Far East Cafe to celebrate the Year of the Horse and the resilience of families living in single-room occupancy housing.
For the Community Champion Award, we honored The Honorable Connie Chan for exemplary leadership and advocacy for Single-room Occupancy housing and the Chinatown community. For the Community Leadership Award, we honored Hailing Li for grassroots leadership in advocating for Single-Room Occupancy (SRO) families.
25 Years of Resilience of SRO Families
Chinatown has long been the gateway for new immigrants, and SROs are often the only place many families can afford. It has been 25 years since Chinatown Community Development Center began serving SRO families and providing services to residents living in SRO buildings. For many families, SROs have been a way of life — sharing kitchens, bathrooms, and a deep sense of resilience. For decades, CCDC has provided housing code and disaster preparedness education, tenant empowerment, tenant counseling, assistance with housing issues, and community advocacy. Over the years, we have helped families move out of SROs and into stable housing.
It takes courage to raise a family. It takes courage to speak up about habitability issues. It takes courage to say that housing is a human right. We still have a long way to go. Thank you for joining us for a special celebration to honor where we come from and where we are heading — together.
Happy Year of the Horse!
