Edwin M. Lee Apartments is a one-of-a-kind, affordable housing community in San Francisco designed to serve both formerly homeless veterans and low-income families in partnership with Swords to Plowshares, a Bay Area-based nonprofit organization serving veterans. Located in the growing Mission Bay neighborhood, the building houses a total of 118 permanently affordable apartments including 62 units designated for formerly homeless veterans and 56 units for low-income families, all provided with on-site resident services. Wrap-around veterans’ services emphasize a tailored individual approach provided onsite via the Department of Veterans Affairs and Swords to Plowshares. CCDC provides services to both families and veterans, emphasizing community-building activities. The project was funded in part through CalVet and HCD’s Veterans Housing and Homelessness Prevention Program (VHHP), with rental subsidies provided by the HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (VASH). The building embraces the community with shared spaces including an internal garden courtyard, a large community room and kitchen, computer lab, teen room and children’s room, in addition to services spaces for both the veteran and family service providers.
In dedication to San Francisco’s late Mayor Ed Lee for his leadership and commitment to affordable housing and ending homelessness for veterans, Edwin M. Lee Apartments reflects his everlasting legacy.
