Namiki Apartments is a senior affordable housing development originally built in 1978 under HUD’s § 236 program. After twenty years as affordable housing, the 236 loan could be prepaid and rents raised to market rates. Upon learning of this potential fate, the Namiki tenants worked to receive an organizing grant from the SF Redevelopment Agency to maintain the building as affordable housing. As part of this process, the tenants chose Chinatown CDC to acquire the development. Working closely with the owner of the Namiki, Chinatown CDC developed a plan to preserve the building as an affordable housing resource for the community. Chinatown CDC officially acquired the property in 2001, performing needed repairs to balconies, kitchens and community areas while helping residents retain their homes.
